Updated 19th February 2021. Please keep an eye on this page for updated information on events during Lent.
Due to the pandemic, it it will not be possible to make our Lenten observations in the usual manner. For this reason the church has been concentrating on developing resources to help people at home mark the beginning of Lent and enter into the spirit of this holy season.
Stations Of The Cross
The Stations of The Cross will take place every Friday during Lent after the 10.30am Mass from the Cathedral via the webcam.
Night Prayer on Facebook Live
NIGHT PRAYER LIVE is returning for Lent 2021. The parish council has recruited volunteers who will broadcast night prayer via Facebook Live on three evenings every week during Lent.
The broadcasts will begin on Ash Wednesday at 9pm and continue every Monday, Wednesday and Friday during Lent at 9pm. We hope you’ll tune in. https://www.facebook.com/newrycathedral
Make your own Lenten Prayer Space
How do we mark the season of Lent when we can’t gather in church? One easy way is to create a Lenten Prayer Space in your home. Here’s what you need:
- A crucifix, statue or other holy image.
- Something purple. Purple is the liturgical colour for Lent, a time of prayer, fasting and doing good deeds for others.
- A candle. This reminds us that Jesus is present with us as we pray.
- A Bible or prayer book.
You may also want to add: flowers, a bowl or vase of sand to represent Jesus’s 40 days in the desert and palms when we reach Palm Sunday.
Home Prayer Service
These resources will include a prayer service for Ash Wednesday at Home, with scripture reading, prayers of the faithful and an opportunity to make Lenten promises. There is also and invitation to symbolically mark – both personally and as a family – the importance of this moment.
