The recently published Northern Ireland Census showed that there are 26,000 Polish people living here. Whilst that number is down from the 2011 Census, it is still the larger ethnic group in Northern Ireland.
There are around 3,000 Polish living in Newry and the Polish influence is here for all to see in our shops, schools, businesses as well as in us having a Consulate in the Town Hall. Many say that the city of Newry could stake a claim for the biggest Polish city in Northern Ireland.
Over 90% of Polish settled here are Catholic yet we have been without a Mass in Polish for some time in Newry. However, the recent appointment of Father Wojciech Stachyra, Society of Christ means we can now have Mass in Polish in Newry. This will commence in Newry Cathedral at 10.30am next Sunday 2nd October.
